Cannabis is legal. 500,000 Canadians are not. Legalize us.

Cannabis was legalized in 2018. While many of us enjoy the benefits of legalization, as of the 4th anniversary of legalization, an estimated 500,000 Canadians with criminal records for cannabis-related offences do not.

In 2022, Cannabis Amnesty ws proud to partner with creative marketing and communication powerhouse, Cossette, to launch a new campaign titled “Legalize Us“. The campaign sought to raise awareness through public education of the impact that cannabis convictions have on individuals ready, willing and qualified to make positive contributions to society.

Canadians with convictions for cannabis possession may be shut out from employment opportunities, public housing, access to loans, travel and in some cases, even the custody of their children. In addition, historically the enforcement of cannabis laws has been unequal, disproportionately impacting Black and Indigenous people and further entrenching the effects of systemic racism. These barriers to accessing social and economic benefits have a cascading negative impact on these individuals, their families and their communities.

The “Legalize Us” campaign featured a groundbreaking short film produced by Magic Circle Workshop, the in-house creative production brand of Cossette. The film invites viewers to encounter the real and visceral impact cannabis convictions have on peoples lives.
